Tips for a Successful Graduate School Application at the Carsey School
Make Sure Your Personal Statement Is Tailored to the Program
Your personal statement is your opportunity to show our admissions team why you're passionate about public service and why you want to pursue a master's degree at Carsey. It also gives the team a look into your specific research or professional interests, allowing us to really get to know you. Be sure to customize your statement to the program you're applying to, whether that be Community Development, Global Conflict & Human Security, Public Administration, or Public Policy. Highlight your experiences, goals, and values in respect to your chosen program.
What should I include?
- Relevant Experience – Any internships, research, or volunteer work that demonstrates your background in public service.
- Career Goals – How Carsey's programs help you achieve them.
- Program Fit – Specific courses, degree tracks, and/or faculty members that align with your interests.
The personal statement isn't just a formality–it's your chance to share your story and let us know why you're the right candidate!
Choose Strong Recommenders
Letters of recommendation serve a vital role in the application process, so choosing the people who write them is just as important. The best recommenders are those who know you well and can speak to your abilities, passions, and experiences.
Who should I ask?
- Professors – It's advised that you have one faculty member with the title "professor" (as opposed to temporary faculty) as a recommender.
- Supervisor – Someone with an advanced degree who has supervised you in an internship, job, or volunteer work.
- Mentor – Can speak to your abilities and passions.
- Additional Recommenders – Someone who has earned the degree you're seeking.
How do I ask?
If possible, asking for a letter of recommendation should be done in person. Explain what you need clearly and directly, talk about how it relates to your academic goals, and let them know why you chose them.
If they agree, make the job easy for them! Give them a deadline and provide them with all your application materials, including a "thank you" and a brief summary of things you would like emphasized in the letter.
Review and Organize Your Application Materials
It's key to carefully review your materials and follow the application checklist to ensure they are complete and align with your desired program. Confirm that your transcripts are up to date, your recommendations have been submitted, and your personal statement is specific to your degree. Taking the time to review everything can prevent errors or omissions that could delay your application process.
