Dedicated to Diversity and Inclusion
The Carsey School of Public Policy is full of impactful students, alumni, and faculty, dedicated to creating positive change in the community. Every two years, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) recognizes individuals dedicated to promoting social justice and equity through the Black Pioneer and Diversity Hall of Fame Award.
This year, Carsey adds another changemaker to that list! Master of Public Administration (MPA) alum and former UNH football player Derek Thompson was nominated and received his award earlier this fall.
Derek was honored for becoming the first African American undergraduate student to join a black Greek letter organization. A member of Omega Psi Phi, the first fraternity founded at a historically Black college and university (HBCU), Derek and his fraternity brothers are dedicated to serving their community.
Committed to Community Service
Derek's work is all about giving back, "my fraternity chapter is based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in the Boston area as well. So we do a lot of non-profit stuff—gathered school supplies this past September for the students in the area. Right now, we're working on a coat drive to distribute warm-weather clothing before the season changes. And we also have a young student-athlete mentorship program. So I'm really big on giving back to the community."
From Student Athlete to Master of Public Administration
Derek's devotion to something bigger than himself started before his time at Carsey. A lifelong football player, he competed as a cornerback on the UNH team while earning his undergraduate degree in Recreational Management and Policy.
As the effects of COVID-19 shook the world, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) granted student-athletes an additional year of eligibility—giving Derek the opportunity to continue his football career and education, joining the Carsey School as an MPA student.
"I went from waking up to go to class to waking up to sit on a computer screen," Derek describes his transition. "I liked the adjustment a lot; you know, it helped me a lot with my time management, trying to balance football while pursuing my master's."
Passionate about non-profit and community-centered work, the public administration program's strong ties to New Hampshire and the non-profit sector are how Derek knew the MPA was the right choice.
Prepared for a Data-Driven Role
During his time at Carsey, Derek found that courses in financial analysis and organizational management helped prepare him for his current role. "I'm not really good with stats and using Microsoft Excel, so that class definitely gave me the strong foundation to help me out with what I'm doing now." Buried in data and working in Excel every day, Derek serves as a quality assurance analyst for JPMorgan Chase.
"I took one course; it was leadership and organizational management, and I learned what type of leader I am. I'm a transformational leader, so what I learned from that is... I teach those around me, but I love to see them succeed as well."
A Word of Advice
To continue his true spirit of giving back, Derek offers guidance to current and prospective Carsey students. "I would say my biggest piece of advice is don't be afraid to ask for help or ask questions. I know, me, I was a little hesitant in the beginning to ask questions, but everyone here wants to see you succeed, you know. They put in all this time and effort for us to succeed, so, you know, use all of your resources and don't be afraid to take opportunities and chances that you come across."
As an online program, students in the MPA get access to UNH's Online Student Success team as well as our academic affairs team.
A Legacy of Leadership and Impact
Derek's journey from UNH student-athlete to MPA graduate and Diversity Hall of Fame awardee is a testament to his commitment to service, leadership, and diversity. His dedication to giving back reflects the values of the Carsey School of Public Policy: fostering leaders who drive change in their communities.
As Derek continues to apply the lessons learned at Carsey, we hope his impact will inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
