"If I could do it, I know I can help other immigrants and they can do it too, so I think that motivates me."

Why Carsey? Angela chose the Global Conflict & Human Security program at the Carsey School School because the professors and the format made for an easy transition from undergrad.
Immigrating from Bolivia in 2017, Angela Fuentes is well acquainted with some of the struggles immigrants face when landing in the States: learning English, getting accustomed to a different culture, and work differences are just a few examples. When thinking about her future, she knew she wanted to be a part of making the immigration process less difficult for individuals. After earning her bachelor's in Public Service and Nonprofit Leadership from the UNH Manchester Campus, Anegla enrolled in the Carsey School’s Master of Global Conflict and Human Security program to be one step closer to achieving her dreams.
“We’re globalized, right? And we have to have relationships with every country, especially if you are seeing it from the U.S. perspective; the U.S. has a lot of influence on other countries. That’s why we need to study global affairs and learn what the U.S. has done to other countries–good or bad–and learn what to do about it. From my immigrant perspective, a lot of people want to come here and it makes me wonder why: why do they want to come here? Why don’t they want to go to different places? Global Affairs helps you learn why they want to come here.”
At the moment, Angela works as an Employment Case Specialist, helping immigrants with the job application and hiring process. She hopes to either have her own non-profit one day dedicated to helping immigrants or to become an immigration lawyer.
