The Fight Against Exploitive Worker Conditions in Sweatshops Around the Globe

Tuesday, March 3, 2015 - 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Squamscott Room, Holloway Commons

co-sponsored by the UNH Peace and Justice League

Scott Nova, executive director of the Worker Rights Consortium in Washington, DC discusses the abusive and exploitative labor conditions in the supply chains of global corporations and the dynamics that perpetuate these conditions.

Nova highlights the public relations strategies used by corporations to manage their reputations, including the use of “corporate social responsibility” programs that can sometimes hide underlying realities. Using examples like the worker safety crisis in the garment industry in Bangladesh and the Alta Gracia clothing factory in the Dominican Republic, which Nova’s organization helps to monitor, he will discuss ways that students and communities can support new efforts to protect and defend workers from these abuses.
